phillip fulmer shouldnt go
Todays announcement regarding the history of the tennessee volunteers coaching staff was far more than shocking. Today phillip fulmer, alongside wife vicky, announced that he will not return as the vols head coach next season.
Here in knoxville there are a lot of mixed emotions about the subject. Some think its time for a change, but i guess those are the ones voting for obama. Many others think that he has earned more than a boot out the door just because the team isnt doing well, and thats where i stand as well.
for 17 years now, coach fulmer has been the face of big orange football. seeing another coach down there running across the power T before the game wont be the same. to be honest, i dont think i can go into neyland stadium without a feeling of sadness if hes not the one leading the volunteers from the sideline. i think he deserves more time to fix the program, but he cant do it alone. i think its terrible that hes the only one taking the blame for a losing season.
Fulmers contract, which was just renewed at the beginning of this season, buyout will cost the university $6million, payable over 48 months. the university is also expected to pay nearly 3 million in buyouts of the rest of the coaching staff.
in todays press conference, fulmer stated that he didnt have time to think about what his next career move will be until the season is over, and they hopefully play a bowl game. attending the conference were several current, and former players, who walked out when fulmer turned the stage over to athletic director, mike hamilton.
